FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Saskatoon, SK – As consultations begin on Canada’s next agricultural policy framework, the Wheat Growers Association is calling on the entire agriculture sector to move beyond identifying challenges and unite around clear, coordinated action to strengthen competitiveness, productivity, and long-term value creation.
In a new op-ed released today, Wheat Growers Chairman Daryl Fransoo emphasizes that while recent commentary across the sector has successfully raised awareness of critical issues, the time has come to align and act.
“The agriculture sector has done an excellent job laying out the challenges we face, from regulatory delays to trade instability to the erosion of our public research capacity,” said Fransoo. “We now have broad agreement on what’s wrong. The opportunity in front of us is to turn that agreement into coordinated action that delivers real results.”
The Wheat Growers highlight four priority areas where alignment and progress are urgently needed:
- Regulatory modernization that improves timelines and supports innovation
- Stronger trade defence and expanded market access
- Reliable transportation systems that protect Canada’s reputation as a dependable supplier
- A renewed and sustainable approach to public research and plant breeding
Fransoo noted that the upcoming policy framework must serve as more than a consultation exercise and instead act as a turning point for the sector.
“This cannot become another process that collects input without driving outcomes,” he said. “We need a framework that is measured by timelines, approvals, and real results, not announcements. That means governments and industry moving together with clarity and accountability.”
The Wheat Growers stress that Canada’s agriculture sector is well-positioned to lead globally, but only if it can align around shared priorities and execute with consistency.
“Prairie agriculture has never moved forward by waiting to be heard,” Fransoo added. “We have always moved forward by working together, showing up with purpose, and insisting on progress. This is one of those moments where unity and action will define what comes next.”
