Your staple foods are under threat. That’s no exaggeration.
If bread, pasta, cereals and even the occasional beer are on your tables, there’s federal public policy that could make those even more expensive for your family.
We’ve all seen the inflation that Covid and monetary policy caused. That’s already been crushing for some families and the food insecure. We’ve also seen the supply disruptions caused by Covid global events that has left some items missing on store shelves.
It’s going to get worse.
Federal policies are making it harder to grow inexpensive, nutritious food. The carbon tax hurts farmers at every stage of production. Now, the federal government is threatening to force a reduction of nitrogen based fertilizer.
That would be disastrous for average Canadians.
If fertilizer is reduced, while input costs are rising, farmers will produce less. Much less. That will increase the cost of food and hurt the supply chain even more. It’s basic economics. The poor will suffer most when the cost of the most basic food staples rise.
And did you know Canadian farmers, with our rich natural soil, already use less fertilizer than most other countries? That means if we produce less, those other countries will fill the gap. So, the world will use more fertilizer, not less. And did you know that part of the reason the Amazon rain forest is being cut down is to make room for grain farms on tropical soil that requires vast amounts of fertilizer?
These policies don’t make sense, they will hurt families. Help us to stop them.
