CALGARY, AB: The Western Canadian Wheat Growers are thrilled at the arrival of grain marketing freedom for prairie farmers at 12:01 a.m. this morning. Western farmers now join their eastern Canadian counterparts in having the freedom to market their own wheat and barley.
“It’s a fantastic day to be a freedom-loving Canadian farmer,” says Kevin Bender, President of the Wheat Growers. “It’s also a day to remember all those who have fought long and hard to achieve this tremendous milestone.”
“The Wheat Growers have dreamed of this day throughout our 42 year history,” says Cherilyn Nagel, Past President of the Wheat Growers. “It’s now a dream come true.”
Bender, Nagel and several Wheat Grower directors, past and present, are attending the marketing freedom celebration being held today at the Walde farm at Kindersley, SK. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and several other leaders will be in attendance.
“The Wheat Growers want to thank the federal government and in particular Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz for their courage and determination in bringing about this valuable policy change,” says Bender. “Farmers can now look forward to a new era of freedom and prosperity!”
